Mayor Inday expands free education program for law, med students
Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, on her first day at work after her maternity leave, signed an Executive Order expanding the coverage of the city government’s scholarship program for deserving students taking medical and legal courses.
Mayor Inday issued Executive Order No. 11, which says recipients of medical scholarships will now be entitled “to a full scholarship (package) consisting of tuition fees, miscellaneous fees, other fees that may be assessed by the medical school and book allowance amounting to P20,000 per semester.”
Law students will also get a similar package except that their book allowance had been pegged at P8,000 per semester.
The amended educational grants are in line with the education thrust of the local government under the Byaheng DO30 initiatives.
The expanded scholarship package will take effect starting School Year 2017-2018 and also aims to benefit poor, underprivileged and deserving students.
The city government’s Educational Benefit System Unit (EBSU) was an expansion of the Scholarship on Tertiary Education Program (STEP) instituted through Executive Order No. 19 issued by then Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte in 2008.
There had been previous amendments since the former mayor issued the EO due to increases in tuition and matriculation fees. CIO
