At least 15 students from Davao City are set to fly to the southern China city of Nanning to study at universities there.

The students will become recipients of the Educational Exchange Program signed between Davao City and Nanning – the capital Guangxi region – as part of their sisterhood agreement.

Under the EEP, the students will be afforded full scholarships in any course, in any school in Nanning. The Nanning City government will also shoulder the cost of their accommodation.

Mayor Inday Sara Duterte said she welcomed the development as a result of the sisterhood agreement of the two cities.

“It is a welcome project between Davao City and Nanning City in China. Hopefully, we can finish the Memorandum of Agreement by August and we can present it to them by September so by next school year we can send the scholars there,” Mayor Inday said.

Mayor Inday said that the scholars are required to take lessons on Mandarin, China’s national language, so they would be able to communicate effectively while living in Nanning, a tropical city of some 6.9 million people.

She said that the city government will provide the scholars with allowances to help them in their study in China.

On Sunday, Nanning Mayor Zhou Hongbo visited the city and discussed with Mayor Inday the scholarship grants to 15 students; and also possible businesses the two cities can venture into.

Mayor Inday said the City was also looking at sponsoring students from Nanning so they could come and study in the city.

“As of now we don’t have a specific project for a scholarship grant (for Nanning students), but their offer of scholarship grant is the start. This is the start of education cooperation (between us),” she said. CIO
