Davao City Enro distributes 700 tree seedlings
The Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) distributed up to 700 pieces of tree seedlings to City Hall employees during Monday’s flag raising rites.
Christopher Asibal, Cenro Chief Environment Management Specialist, said the distribution was part of the city’s observance of the World Environment Day.
Asibal said the seedlings were handed out to those who have existing gardens or those who want to start a new one. He said the distribution also symbolized the need for more people to start planting trees to make the world sustainable.
He encouraged the employees of the City Hall to join the campaign to protect the environment.
The tree seedlings given away included the Philippine chestnut, mahogany, guyabano, marang, and avocado.
Among those who received the seedings was Norma Busotros, an employee of the City Cooperative Office.
“One of my hobbies is gardening, that’s why I took advantage of the free seedlings distributed today by Cenro,” she said.
Presidential Proclamation No. 237 has designated the month of June as Philippine Environment Month.
Globally, the Environment Day is celebrated every June 5. It is a strategy implemented by the United Nations to encourage worldwide environmental awareness and protection.
UN’s flagship campaign was first held in 1974 with the theme “Only One Earth,” and has since been celebrated in at least 143 countries worldwide.
The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “Connecting People to Nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator.” CIO
