‘Dabawenyo kindness’ in times of disaster wins photo contest
Kindness in times of disaster, love of family, and faith in God were the themes that dominated the recently concluded Hulagway sa Pasko 2017 Photo Competition.
Davao photographers would usually train their lenses on the highlights of the annual Pasko Fiesta Celebration, but when Mayor Inday Sara Duterte announced the cancelation of events because of the onslaught of Typhoon Vinta, these heart-tugging photos were captured.
Rustan Samson’s winning photo showed people hauling relief goods donated by kind-hearted citizens for victims of Typhoon Vinta.
Based on judges’ decision, Samson’s piece exemplified how Christmas was celebrated in the city — despite the massive flooding that affected over 30 villages and displaced thousands of people.
Samson will receive a cash price of P15,000.
Ian Russell Requiso’s entry — “Christmas Selfie” — was declared second place winner. The photo showed a family enjoying the celebration with the Candyland-themed City Hall as a backdrop. He will receive P10,000 for his winning photo.
Benedict Rizaldo Maboloc, meanwhile, captured how Filipinos faith in God. He will receive P5,000 for his winning photo.
Mayor Inday Sara’s Mayor’s Choice Award went to Carlos Ng’s photo of children having a good time while being photographed with the giant Christmas tree at the Rizal Park.
The 17 runners-up who will receive 1,500 pesos each for their winning photo entries are Ryan Buhian, William Chin, Christian Joy Salas, Arfe Gavilanes, Carlos Ng, Beth Alvanez, Kathryn Lianne Ronco, Jerome Batain, Kenneth Paul Senarillos, Kinneth Bendijo and Ludwig Tupas. Samson, Requiso and Maboloc’s other photos also made it as runners-up. CIO
